So, I was out giving blood today and reading an older issue of Newsweek. (It's not my favorite mag. I'm more of an Bark and Economist guy but beggars can't be choosers.) Anyhoo, there was an article about pet health and the many, many pills we are putting in our pets.
First of all, I certainly agree that medication has its uses for pets. Sure, the only cat I've ever been a part owner of was a Christian Scientist and lived 14 adventurous and productive years. Her one and only trip to the vet was to get vaccinated and spayed. The second and third attempts to get in the car led to some serious clawing of my brother (heh heh - still laugh about that) and her quick confirmation into the Christian Scientist methodology.
Now, every one of my dogs had their lives improved at one point or another by pharma. I'd spend just about anything to keep them healthy. But weight-loss pills? C'mon.... Anyone using this as a long term method of weight control should be brought up on pet abuse charges.
Here is the deal: If you own a dog, someone in your house should be in charge of getting out the ball or frisbee and playing throw, catch, & return for at least 30 minutes a day. I don't care if you've got a Toy Pincher or a Mastiff - get that pooch out to play. In my mind, you shouldn't be allowed to own a dog unless some one does that (or some other form of exercise) DAILY. First of all, its good for their health. Secondly, they literally take the play as a form of love from you. Finally, it's good for you, too!
So, if you have an overweight dog or cat, its your fault and its time to make some changes for their lives. Here are some ideas on getting your pet's weight under control. And, PLEASE, get out and play!
